alucina, vecina

¡Que he llegado a Madrid!

I'm seriously thinking of dropping the trilingual feature of this blog, never was a fan of telling the same thing more than twice. I'm in Madrid (finally!)

Vuelvo...

Estoy rojo (capullo)

The weather was splendid
As every year in the company we held a barbeque yesterday, just in this time of the year when the summer can still give good days for outside events. My face is red now, who was asking for a beach day? After the sunset and the cleaning I remained there with two friends, enjoying the faraway sound of other groups playing with fireworks. One of them, after two years of studying Spanish told me that after yesterday's experience she'd better started English. A pity, but sometimes I have the same feeling. Too many things to do, and not enough time. Thus "the pile of unfinished things(TM)" keeps on growing, as we move towards new projects. Like this blog :)~

I'm listening to Dido's Dawson's Creek theme, and my current struggle is to include jpg files in LaTeX. I'm sick of seeing myself joining to the trend of the general ideas (TeX is cool, you write it once and you can compile it in any computer, blah blah blah) and then realizing that I have spent two days with the same problem. Looking it from that point of view, Macintosh might not a bad option... I have not heard anyone saying that is unstable, slow or even ugly. Besides, the fact that from the version X they have the console might make the migration easier for me. I am closer to the keyboard than to the mouse. Oh my God, what a freaky confession... whatever, free software/propietary software is not as important as gas emitting/electric car, or right/left wing. Besides, you have to try in order to decide that you don't like it.

Talking about cool ideas, there we go with the css/layers html thingy, the other day when I open this blog in Explorer I found that the left menu appeared at the bottom of the page, after the messages! More time to spend in things that are supposed to be write once run anywhere *sigh*

CNN.com - Norway hunts for stolen 'Scream' - Aug 23, 2004: "OSLO, Norway -- Norwegian police have launched a nationwide hunt for armed thieves who stole two classic paintings by Edvard Munch, including "The Scream", in a brazen daytime heist in Oslo."

Summer of the 2004

Ganguro Girl 1.5 - Flash Games: "Get educated, built and charming; work a job buy gifts and try to get the girl by going on dates with her."

With this simple and suggesting title (thanks Rafa for the present!) we get my opportunity for this summer to make out with no sweat. If no sweating would be possible with this unbearable heat.

Dance Performance
My summer have had few highlights so far, one of them being that I joined a dance class (!!) Hip hop. Why? Well, I was happy with my basketball last year, but it was hard to connect with the guys after the training for having some ramen or talk about our weekend. And going just for the sports training is not that funny, so I quited, lost some shape, then heard about the dance thing and after convincing myself that it was not gay at all I finally joined.
They made a performance recently in the Atsugi 'Trout' Festival (a small name for a small town) and they kicked ass, people will applaud and cheer the song for them more than for the singer.

Japan is a nice place in summer if you like to eat. The neighborhoods and cities all over the country will organize their own festival so it's quite probable that within 25 kilometers from the place you live five different firework shows will be held in July or August. They spend a lot of money there, but I reckon that they earn a lot of money too with the rental of the food stands, you couldn't believe the amount of people that goes to the festivals.
Ayu Matsuri Mikoshi
Portable shrine
In small cities like the one I live there is less people, and the fireworks have more pauses. Before every burst you will be told the sponsor and meaning of the next five minutes display (useless for the viewer, except to know which are the local companies with enough money to spend in this kind of publicity). You can see a lot of kids too, and both the girls and the guys like to dress in the traditional japanese summer clothing.

In the big city there is even more people. It is really hard to walk, and there is more kind of food to choose from. Last Sunday a friend of mine told me that it was some samba festival going on near Roppongi, so we went there to check it out.
fast impression of a crowded festival
people, lights and fast food
It was held in the neighbourhood of Azabu, and altough there was no samba nor fireworks (the samba is this week in Asakusa, I already made plans to go there and check) the atmosphere was crazy. We went to an international area full of shops from all over the world, although of course it was the japanesized version of it, they even brought some guys from Barcelona to prepare Fideuà; they had a big paellera and t-shirts of "Sabado sabadete" which is a (little bit expensive) Catalan restaurant in Ebisu.

Before that festival we had been in a party organized by the Embassy of Venezuela in Japan. I don't get why that obsession with some of the locals with the international. My japanese friends even asked me on our way to Tokyo "but you are international, aren't you?" to which I replied, perplexed, "what do you mean? I am a human being". They meant that I had a lot of foreing friends, which is right. So far from my experience, the Japanese tend to see foreigners in terms of the country they come from, not individually or by their education or background. I guess that coping with this conversations is what it takes; after all being an outsider means that a large number of "first conversations" with the (japanese) people I meet are going to be closer to "where are you from? oh, your japanese is so good" than to "do you like soccer? did you watch yesterday's match?".

When I think I have a good relationship with someone and they ask me something like that and I cannot help thinking "does he see me as Alvaro or as a Spanish friend?" And it also had happened that when I decided to drop a little bit my formality because I believe to have a good relationship with someone she warned me that my japanese was getting worse and that it didn't seem that I respected our friendship. I mean, that kind of close language just looked bad on me, and I don't know if it was because she just had a better impression of me or only because I'm a foreigner. There is plenty of examples like this one, being waiting for a friend which I believed to be close and receiving a call from her telling that she is tired and if it was ok to cancel our dinner. Of course I didn't care, I understood she wanted to rest, but I cannot help to wonder "maybe if I would have been japanese she would have come no matter how tired she was..." which at the end I cannot decide if it's better or worse. But I can see that being a foreigner makes people treat me differently in some occasions, and feeling different (that kind of different) is not nice always.

Well, conclusion: more madness to my weekends when what I need is time to write my report and sleep. I wonder where does it lurk that traditional tatami-room and quiet life often being portrayed in the guide books and novels. Not in Kanto definitely, and my guess is that neither is in Kansai, land of the greedy.

Broke again

The Gambler Lyrics:
Now ev’ry gambler knows that the secret to survivin’
Is knowin’ what to throw away and knowing what to keep.
’cause ev’ry hand’s a winner and ev’ry hand’s a loser,
And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep.

Which basically suggests that if you are going to have a hard time it'd better came from somewhere you coulndn't expect, so you can decide again what to you with your hand. That makes me feel terribly guilty because we are on the 16th and I'm already wondering which plan should I cancel (too many "sure, I'll be there!" for the end of this month). Besides, this particular obsession of mine for inviting to my female friends no matter what has proven not to be of a great aid for my economy. Hum... and going out only with guys is not the solution eheheh.

This week another trainee goes back to her country. Goodbye Rita, without you the group will loose all its energy! :( I'm starting to think that all this are just but insinuations from my guardian angel to get more time to write my paper. Recently I cannot think in anything else. Ironically, I do all except that. And this evening is the dance class *sigh*

Fuga radioactiva

:: Xinhuanet - English ::: "Nuclear leak leaves 4 dead in Japan"

Morfeo

Pay day

After one of the worst months ever (economically speaking), God listened to my distress mayday call and now my wallet is not that sad anymore. Although the first thing I will do is to pay the accumulated bills and dues, that won't liberate me of any pressure, as I'm using tomorrow's money for today's bread.

When I was a kid I took as granted that I will end up with a life similar to my dad's: three children, a wife, a house, a car, show fishing to my son on spring and rent a house near the beach in summer. Now I'm 28 (it didn't hurt as much as I expected) and I'm living in a 14 sq.m room that doesn't even belong to me. My most expensive possesion is maybe a go board that a chinese friend gave me for my birthday. Is not that I complaint about my situation, my satisfied mind helps me to be grateful to what I have been given. But definitively I have no kids, no car, and no summer house.

I will go now to my Spanish class, tomorrow to stay at a friends', and on Sunday I will go to the cinema to watch King Arthur or another easy movie. From next week I will focus like a berserker in my graduation thesis, I'm sure that by then I will have given up to comparing with my father, hehehe.

*suspiro*

Update from mails

I just discovered the possibility of updating this blog by mail, this guys of blogger are really great. Although it is not possible yet to post pictures, is nice to feel the power of the communication at the tip of your fingers.

This make me think about those science fiction stories where everyone has an ID chip inserted somewhere, while people from 'above' are monitoring them 24/7. Even now, remarkable people like Richard Stallman don't believe in cell phones because of that feeling of being observed.

I particularly believe that the trade off of freedom/possibilities is a personal choice. Is true that alone we feel in total control of ourselves, as equally true is that a group is more than the addition of the individuals. The point is how much time will it pass until it's no longer a choice. Maybe we shouldn't worry, by then the Poles would melt as well and we will be all busy trying to cope with more urgent things like ozone holes.

Empanada mental

A currar... *suspiro*

Let's dance

Junichiro Koizumi
International News Article | Reuters.com: "Official results have not yet been published but media said Koizumi's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) won only 49 of the 121 seats at stake on Sunday, missing its modest target of 51."

Mount Fuji

Sunrise from Mt. Fuji

There is a saying here in Japan that goes like "If you haven't climbed Mt. Fuji then you are an idiot. If you have climbed it twice you are an idiot too." Regardless of if that makes me an idiot again or not, I felt so happy when I reached the top. Compared with two years ago, it took fifteen minutes more to climb and an hour more to go down. But I wasn't at all as tired once all finished, which proves me again that I am still young. Actually I am thinking of climbing it a third time...

Bloomberg.com: Japan

Bloomberg.com: Japan: "Koizumi may face calls to resign in case his ruling Liberal Democratic Party fails to hold on to its 51 seats. Finance Minister Sadakazu Tanigaki said the party isn't having an easy campaign for the upper house election."

Yen falls and I cannot believe that Koizumi *really* thinks of leaving his position, it has only been 3 years so far (despite of the previous Prime Ministers Obuchi and Mori short terms, but those seemed less ambitious). Elections will be held on next July 11, and will decide 121 lawmakers for the upper house of the Parliament. On LPD's favour, the two years of economic expansion. Against, recent nonconformisms resulting from Irak intervention and basically free time.

Also deserving of a smile is Okada's argument. The Democratic Party of Japan's leader has qualified Koizumi's decision to send Japanese troops to help U.S.-led forces of anti-constitutional; the truth is that this post war document forbids participation in overseas conflicts.

My japanese acquaintances are few in number and thus not representative of how the country sees their leaders. But more than that, and from the point of view of the minority I belong to, I really don't know if there will be any difference for me if either candidate holds the majority at the end.

The more I think about these things the more I don't understand why I am here, and the more I dislike bureaucracy. Oh, how much I miss that feeling of handling the society I had the first time I read Russeau!

Japan Today - Assaults increasing on pro-Pyongyang Korean students

Japan Today - News: "Assaults increasing on pro-Pyongyang Korean students"

The New York Times > Sports > Soccer > European Championships: Plucky Portugal Goes to the Final, and the Dutch Go Home

The New York Times: "Plucky Portugal Goes to the Final, and the Dutch Go Home"

Mwahaha! Now I have to paint my laptop as I promised *sigh* More important than that, we'll have to cope with Mike's bad mood. Guess that the worst thing of having the ego of the size of Mars is that inevitably some sense of humor has to be lost. Well, it could have been worse as in our lovely group Portugal has Rita as its avatar, and it's hard to get angry with her. C'mon Mike! It's not the end of the world, you're still handsome man! :)~

Talking about our group, yesterday we celebrated Cherry's farewell (I would post some pictures but I still have to solve some issues with the firewall). More than an 'adiós' we tried to make an 'it has been good to meet you' kind of dinner. Mike helped by Rita prepared an outstanding commemorative video and we all ended eating okonomiyaki as any other day.

Soon more people will leave, one by one, and by the end of this year the only thing remaining will be a T-shirt with our picture and a bunch of e-mail addresses. Although this might sound sad, I don't see it that way because no matter where we end up in it has been great to meet them.

eTaiwanNews.com/Sweden flattened by Orange crush

eTaiwanNews.com/Sweden flattened by Orange crush: "Sweden flattened by Orange crush"

That made my mate's night in Roppongi more exciting, as Mike is now overconfident of their obliteration over the Portuguese on the next match, for Rita's increasing skepticism. With Spain eliminated, I reckon that I will be happy with our neighbour's victory. If they reach the final, I promise to paint my laptop in Red and Green! (oh my God, is with promises like this in weak moments where you have more fun, don't you?)

independencia

mike.life.japan

mike.life.japan: "Elia, my Italian friend "

This is what I meant: an update every four months? Not even the dire straits had such a low steadiness.

This guy is one of the trainees I'm sharing internship with. His name's Spaans, Mike Spaans (the porn actor? nope: the dutch psycho :P) Elia, btw, is another trainee.

I suppose it's never too late for joining the mainstream. I'm talking about the 'my homepage' trend, for lazy people as me it's a noble alternative to writing e-mails to the acquaintances. Argh... I don't know, something's telling me that this will end up in the pile of unfinished things!
